Why Nothing in an Italian Closet Looks Brand New

I opened a friend's wardrobe outside Bergamo, and everything in it had been worn a hundred times.

1 · The wardrobe

Not shabby. Softened.

A linen shirt gone the color of weak tea at the collar. A navy knit relaxed at the elbows. She was the best-dressed woman I knew.

2 · The word

Italians call it vissuto

It just means lived. Said about a face, it means a face with a history in it. Said about a jacket, it is the same compliment.

3 · The craft

One town spent thirty years perfecting it

In Gambara, near Brescia, Boglioli began dyeing jackets after stitching them. The color lands unevenly, so a new jacket arrives already looking worn.

4 · The science

Linen does it for free

Flax fiber comes stiffened with pectin, and pectin dissolves in water. Every wash takes some out. Most people feel the change by the fourth one.

Stop saving it

Nothing is coming that deserves the good piece more than an ordinary Wednesday. Start with a fiber that rewards the wearing.
