Italians Don't Fear Friday the 13th. They Fear Another Day.

Today the shops are open, the weddings go ahead, and nobody in Italy has noticed.

1 · Venerdì 17

The wrong day entirely

In Italy the unlucky date is Friday the 17th. Write 17 as XVII, rearrange it, and you get VIXI: Latin for 'I have lived.'

2 · Row 17

Real enough to be practical

Some Alitalia planes skipped row 17. An American Friday the 13th spoof was retitled with venerdì 17 for Italian audiences.

3 · Fare tredici

Thirteen means winning

Italy's football pools once asked you to call 13 matches. Getting all 13 was the jackpot, and 'to make thirteen' became a stroke of luck.

4 · A small invitation

Wear what you were saving

A floral jacket and matching pants, brown and burgundy flowers on cream. Autumn flowers, so they belong in November.
